WIPL-D Pro CAD 2015 Training - Lesson 1

To make users familiar with WIPL-D Pro CAD software and make the modeling easy, a WIPL-D Tutorial has been prepared in the form of short video materials (Lessons) with step-by step instructions.

In Lesson 1 we demonstrate modeling and simulation of 3 simple, but widely used wires antennas:

  • Dipole antenna
  • Monopole antenna over an infinite ground plane
  • Monopole antenna over a finite ground plane

Modeling of the port as delta generator is described using dipole antenna model. Monopole antenna over an infinite ground plane is used to demonstrate symmetry feature (PEC plane) in WIPL-D. Junction between plates and wires is described in model of Monopole antenna over a finite ground plane.

YZS parameters and radiation pattern are calculated for all three models.

WIPL-D Pro CAD 2015 Training - Lesson 2

In Lesson 2 step-by-step modeling and simulation of a horn antenna fed with rectangular waveguide is demonstrated.

The model is created in two ways:

  • Full model
  • Quarter model by using symmetry

Horn antenna is widely used antenna, so having a tutorial on its modeling and simulation is very useful.

In the tutorial user is instructed how to use solid primitives and Boolean operations. Model is fed by a Waveguide Port.

Quarter model has been presented to demonstrate WIPL-D symmetry feature which can be utilized in order to decrease number of unknowns and simulation time, without sacrificing the accuracy.

WIPL-D Pro CAD 2015 Training - Lesson 3

In this video modeling and simulation of the patch antenna with infinite ground plane and one symmetry plane is demonstrated.

Patch antennas and various types of printed antennas are very popular because of theirs simplicity and low price. Defining the dielectric materials and setting dielectric properties to Regions and Faces is demonstrated in the tutorial. Additionally, Edging feature, which should be used to get more accurate results. Additionally, the symmetry feature is used to decrease a required number of unknowns.

Healing Tools

Imported CAD models, initially created in mechanical/engineering tools, usually contain geometric irregularities and details which are irrelevant for electromagnetic simulation. This often leads to irregular EM models after the meshing process has been performed.

This video demonstrates the automatic recognition of geometry irregularities in WIPL-D Pro CAD, and the irregularity fixing by using powerful healing tools, which can be grouped as follows:

  • Repair (Simplify geometry, Repair geometry and Sew faces)
  • Rebuild (Fill hole, Remove hole, feature or blend)

WIPL D Microwave Pro
Increasing Modeling Accuracy for Microstrip Circuits

WIPL-D Microwave Pro tool can be used to combine full 3D EM simulation with circuit simulation in a single simulation environment.

The video demonstrates different microstrip modeling methods in WIPL-D Microwave Pro, using a branch line coupler as an example.

Microstrip circuit elements can be modeled as ideal, analytical or 3D EM. Alternatively, the whole branch line circuit can be modeled as 3D EM component. Selection of a modeling method is a trade off between accuracy and speed of the calculation.

WIPL-D - Simulation of Complex CAD Geometries

After importing a CAD file into an EM tool, the adaptation of the model is required before running an EM simulation.

This video illustrates the process of importing, preparing and simulating complex geometries in WIPL-D. Calculation of an RCS for F16 fighter airplane has been used as an example. The entire process, from model importing to healing and meshing in WIPL-D Pro CAD v2014 is presented.

Different mesh settings have been demonstrated in order to make user more familiar with meshing algorithm and the ways of reduction the number of unknowns without coarsening the geometry of the model.
